Disclaimer: I am not being compensated for this review – I found a product and fell in love and I’m sharing my experience with you candidly, and Mamma Chia was nice enough to let me include a giveaway with this post. They did provide me with a package of samples to initially try the product, and since then I’ve made a few orders so I can enjoy it daily.
Chia seeds are known as being among the superfoods, loaded with nutrients that have benefits for your mind and body. The plant they come from grows natively in South America and was an important food to the Aztecs and Mayans – “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength.” They are rich in Omega-3s, antioxidants, protein and fiber, making them a wonderful addition to salads, smoothies, baked goods, etc.
The main reason I decided to try the Mamma Chia product line was for the Omega-3s. I have been using fish oils for some time and I cannot stand fish, which made the “fish burps” that sometime come along with them unbearable.
I have fallen in love with the Chia Squeeze Vitality Snack, which I now use daily in place of fish oils. Each squeeze contains:
- Chia + Fruit + Vegetables
- 1200mg Omega-3
- Good source of Fiber
- 70-80 calorie pouch
- Gluten Free & Vegan
In addition to containing 1200mg of Omega-3, the Chia Squeeze Vitality Snacks also contain 500mg of Omega-6 and 210mg of Omega-9. All of these are categorized as “healthy fats” (Omega-3 and Omega-6 are two types of polyunsaturated fat and Omega-9 is a monounsaturated fat) that are all beneficial. Some of the health benefits of including them in your diet are: they prevent coronary heart disease, stoke and diabetes; they promote healthy nerve activity and cell development; they improve vitamin absorption; and they help the body maintain a healthy immune system.
I enjoy storing mine in the fridge, and I’ve also read about some people putting them in the freezer. Either way, the fresh taste and fun design makes them an easy snack for adults and children around the house or on the go.
My first thought when I tried the Squeeze was “weird!” They have a very distinct flavor – it’s like jello with seeds. It didn’t bother me, it was just different.
The Chia Squeeze Vitality Snacks are available in 6 flavors: Strawberry Banana, Green Magic, Apple Cinnamon, Blackberry Bliss, Mango Coconut and Wild Raspberry. The awesome folks at Mamma Chia hooked me up with a sample pack so I could try each flavor, and I noted my thoughts on each one for you.
Strawberry Banana. This is my favorite type of flavor across the board so I tried this one first. There were equal tastes of both the strawberry and banana and I found it enjoyable.
Wild Raspberry. Yum! All berry, all awesome. Definitely one of my favorites.
Blackberry Bliss. Yum again! Very heavy on the blackberry taste, which is not a bad thing at all.
Mango Coconut. I was hesitant about this one because I am very particular about coconut – sometimes I get the “suntan lotion” taste from it and I don’t like it. This Squeeze was heavy on the mango and had just a hint of coconut – very smooth.
Apple Cinnamon. This one tasted like apple pie filling, Erik said like apple sauce. I don’t care for this one but it’s only because I really don’t like apple-flavored anything. Erik gladly finished it off for me.
Green Magic. It was hard to pinpoint the flavor on this one, it was fruity with a hint of mint flavor. I enjoyed it.
Mamma Chia also carries Vitality Beverages that come in Blackberry Hibiscus, Cherry Lime, Coconut Mango, Cranberry Lemonade, Guava Mamma, Pineapple Coconut, Pomegranate Mint, Raspberry Passion, and Strawberry Lemonade.
I have tried the Strawberry Lemonade, Cranberry Lemonade and Guava Mamma to date and I enjoy them. Their texture is similar to the Squeeze Vitality Snacks and their flavors are strong yet subtle at the same time. Very enjoyable.
The benefits that come from the Vitality Beverages are:
- 2500mg Omega-3
- Excellent source of Fiber
- Powerful Antioxidants
- 4g Complete Protein
- 95g Calcium
- 120 calories
- Lightly Sweetened
- Gluten-Free & Vegan
Also in the Mamma Chia product lineup are a line of Energy Beverages (featuring Grape Power, Cherry Charge, Blackberry Blast and Raspberry Razz) and Chia Seeds that come in Organic Black Chia and Organic White Chia. I have not tried either of these products yet, but I do plan to do so and I’ll update my review at that time letting you know what I think.
